Armed and Happy

Armed and Happy, as one of the episodes of the series Armed and Dangerous, focuses on the emotionality of social media and its role in the militarization of Ukrainian society. The ability of social media to capture emotions and retranslate them, turn emotional contagion into a closed collective practice, and the community — into a single organism capable of achieving real change. This form of collectivity, which develops on the basis of digital interaction, can have very different consequences. Where exactly is the line between solidarity and radicalization? How can empathy turn into hatred?

The Armed and Happy series explores common emotional accents in virtual practices – from sports broadcasts to weapon exercises – in an effort to see how previously unacceptable behaviors are normalized through their collective spread in social media, how they become part of everyday life, contributing to further emotional contamination.

Armed and Dangerous is a project bringing together a group of Ukrainian artists who work at the intersection of contemporary art and experimental cinema. It was initiated by Mykola Ridnyi in 2017 when he created the first video episodes that started the series. After his own production, he invited other authors to create short films exploring the phenomenon of violence in everyday life. As a result, the collective body of works was shown and exists in different representative formats: as a moving image exhibition, screening programme and online platform – www.ozbroeni.in.ua. Armed and Dangerous explores the militarisation of society and, in particular, the attitude of Ukrainian youth to violence and weapons. Much attention is paid to the patriotic and militaristic education of children, both in schools and at sport camps. In this context, the problem of domestic violence, which largely affects women and children, remains virtually unnoticed in the Ukrainian political landscape.

Озброєні та щасливі, як один з епізодів серіалу Озброєні та небезпечні, фокусується на емоційності соціальних медіа та її ролі у мілітаризації українського суспільства. Здатність соціальних медіа захоплювати емоції та ретранслювати їх, перетворюють емоційне зараження на замкнену колективну практику, а спільноту — на єдиний організм здатний домагатися реальних змін. Така форма колективності, що розвивається на основі цифрової взаємодії, може мати дуже різні наслідки. Де саме проходить межа між солідаризацією та радикалізацією? Як емпатія може перетворюватись на ненависть?

Епізод Озброєні та щасливі досліджує спільні емоційні акценти у віртуальних практиках — від розпаковки товарів, трансляцій спортивних заходів та політичних подій до вправ зі зброєю — у спробі помітити як неприйнятні раніше моделі поведінки стають частиною повсякденності.

Озброєні та небезпечні — це проект-платформа, що об’єднує групу художниць та художників, режисерок та режисерів, які працюють на перетині сучасного мистецтва та експериментального кіно. Микола Рідний ініціював проект у формі серіалу, після створення власних епізодів запросивши до співпраці інших авторок та авторів. Цей колаж присвячений темі мілітаризації суспільства, що стосується кожного та, зокрема, ставленню молоді до насилля та зброї. Проект спрямований на зображення крихкого становища українського суспільства, що зазнає зовнішнє військове втручання на сході та активність ультраправих рухів всередині країни.
